The bearer of immortality
Occupying a new residential or commercial space in India is a much
anticipated affair.
Before occupying it, a kalash (literally, ‘pot’), is placed at the entrance,
symbolising creation and immortality.
The brass, copper or earthen pot is a ‘seat’ for the deities invoked during
the ritual. It is filled with water that keeps it pure and mango leaves and a
coconut to attract the divine presence in the atmosphere.
The kalash is an especially integral part of all ‘griha pravesh’ or house
warming ceremonies in India.
